Bedford RL/Derwent ET City of York VDN 100

1974 this 1960 appliance was in use at York until 1979. I assume this was a local bodybuilder. see Transport models website 1071 for Pete Matten's nice model at 1:76 in North Yorkshire livery.

Ed.: see picture 16008 and picture 14668 also for this appliance.

Thankyou Petros for the comment in reference to my attempt at re-producing this 1960 Bedford RL
Emergency Tender as a model for a project I'm doing.I'm trying to re-produce York's appliances from this period in the yellow livery, and then a model of the old Clifford Road fire station which I've just started making.I'm pleased (very pleased) to see some more pictures-most helpful in my project so thanks very much.
The bodywork to this vehicle was by Derwent?.I have no other details, but maybe Paul Warnock can help with more information on this.Thanks,Pete.

Hi Petros thanks for sharing the photo of this York appliance. Pete the bodywork was carried out by Derwent Coachworks in York, and I was told that the internal fitting was done by the firemen on station as they were all tradesmen taken on by the City Brigade. It had a large generator on board to power electric power tool. I am looking for a photo of the rear of this vehicle and the Commer walk Thru Salvage unit from York, dont know if anybody can help ?

Paul, Very interested in this period of the Brigades life. I did like the yellow livery of this era. I do believe "York" operated four frontline appliances in yellow possibly five as I have a colour photo of an AEC Park Royal 100ft Turntable Ladder in yellow awaiting disposal in a compound. The appliance is in ICI Coventry Fire Brigade Yellow with the tell-tale jet black wheels associated with York, this was the first T.L of its type to be supplied to any UK Brigade.
The Commer Walk Thru (I think is built by Dennis)
they did market this type of appliance I have the sales brochure for it its original livery was red.

York has a AEC Merryweather TL......I believe it was the first of 'new model' TL with the operators sit on control console mouted on the side of the fulcrum frame

Hi Bob,the TL that served the City of York was registered OVY200,and was from 1957 and was a 100ft AEC/Merryweather TL.This appliance remained at the Clifford Street fire station in York until going out of service in 1983.The actual ladder from OVY200 later being remounted on a 1982 Shelvoke & Drewry chassis of an ex-Harrowgate appliance which continued to see service until 1994.
Bob,I have pictures of 5 appliances that served at one time in the City of York in the yellow livery, are you sure the TL was re-liveried?,because if so,that will be now give a total of 6 appliances in the yellow livery.
The Commer KC40 Walkthru Van(Salvage Tender)was from 1962 and yes originally in red, later re-liveried to yellow. This appliance had bodywork by a company called Russell.I can't find any mension about Dennis in regards to that vehicle.

Pete, I would go with your information regarding the Commer KC40 Walkthru Van, with regard to this Brigade I don't have the knowledge that I have on West Sussex Dennis did market an identical KC40 vehicle that was similiar to York. The picture I have is a AEC T.L a fireman from this area said "Yorks" T.L was repainted in its final days to Yellow you can't tell on the photo as the number plate is missing and the Crest was painted over, its awaiting disposal at North Yorkshire Workshops.

Hi Bob. I don't think City of York's AEC TL was ever painted yellow. As Pete say's there were 5 appliances painted yellow in service with York City. The Commer walkthrough Chimney/salvage van, Ford D series water ladder, Bedford RL ET, ERF 50ft Snorkel and the Bedford 4x4. I have seen a photo floating round the Internet of a yellow painted AEC TL I seem to remember it owned by a Tree Surgeon. Would it be possible to publish your photo please. Paul
