I don't think I will ever get used to just how ugly these current generation of London Ategos have become.

There are loads of examples of spacious crew cabs on Atego chassis from numerous body builders in many countries on this site, and very few seem to have been hit quite so hard by the famous Ugly Stick....

The BSPP pumper illustrated in picture 19717 on this site is my favorite, providing accommodation for a total of nine crew, and looking just as if the crew cab was built by the same people as the original Atego truck cab.

Hi Rob, hope you are well. I agree totally, about the ugliest duckling produced for a long time!

Tall cabs seem to be the latest fashion accessary for UK brigades

picture 43270 illustrates that an Atego/Magirus pumper with a tall cab does not have to look hideous! "Tall" cabs are increasingly popular here in he US too, but their advantages are not all that obvious - and numerous professional big cities including FDNY, CFD, BFD and LAFD just are not buying any of them... The do of course cost more, so there must be a lot of salesmen pitching their "benefits", if any.

Lancashire FRS have decided that they need this type of ugly pope-mobile cum fire tender monstrosity crew cab design too.

These appliances have the extra tall cab including the 'top hat' extension to meet a Babcock specification of internal height of 6'11", so crews can stand in the rear cab to change into water kit etc.

Sounds like another cost saving idea to eliminate having dedicated water rescue units, which are widespread in other European countries. Even small towns and villages on lakes or rivers often have a dedicated water rescue with a boat trailer. In the US, when fire departments occasionally combine water rescue with heavy rescue squad trucks, these usually have a center aisle high roof design to accommodate crews donning water rescue gear. These same compartments also usually include both line rescue kit and hazmat suits, as well as long duration BA sets. This London unit certainly looks like a compromise, and an obvious effort at getting a pound out of a penny purse.
