Bring your own water if you want to extinguish a fire is the typical response in the Philippines, as many areas are lacking hydrants. It is not unusual to see relays of pumpers sending their tank water to numerous others over quite long distances at serious incidents.
This approach is also increasingly common in many areas of Europe, as older limited water distribution systems are often not keeping pace with more intensive urban development when it comes to the needed pressure and flow capacity of the hydrant network.
An early response to this issue was the Belgian government’s decision to supply scores of 8000 litre tankers to many small town urban fire brigades, on Renault and Steyr chassis, many of which are illustrated on this site.
picture 19314 on this site illustrates one of the Steyr 8000 litre tankers issued by the Belgian government, mentioning that this generation of vehicles has now been largely replaced by similar or even higher capacity tankers.
