Ford Transit XYB514HThis photo was taken by Lester Solway and is reproduced with his permission. It shows the Ford transit 250 Light Pump that was stationed at Banwell Fire Station all its life. It was purchased by Somerset Fire Brigade in 1969 along with its sister XYB515H which was stationed at the volunteer station at Wrington replacing a wartime ATV.
Both Banwell and Wrington passed into the County of Avon Fire Brigade in April 1974 and were also made up from being volunteer stations to retained. Both were closed in January 1980 and this picture was taken on 4th January 1980 on the day the appliance was being withdrawn.
Both stations are still in existence and a group of volunteers still maintain the station at Banwell which celebrated its 125th Anniversary earlier this year. Going inside the station is like stepping back in time with items of memorobilia on display and it now houses a Land Rover Redwing. There are still hooks in the ceiling for hanmmocks from the NFS days along with hooks on the chimney breast where they hung their kit up to dry above the open fire.
The ATV GGX426 from Wrington was loaned to the Kent Fire Brigade Museum and until recently was still there. Anyone know what happened to it when the museum closed?
