FDNY Memorial Wall (left side) at Ten House Two years ago Paul Warnock submitted
picture 19657 of the FDNY Memorial Wall at Ten House that commemorates the 343 members of the Fire Department of New York who paid the Ultimate Sacrifice on 9/11 on that terrible day ten years ago.
At the time that Paul took his picture, the wall was partially obscured by scaffolding and so he was unable to submit a full shot but the sheer size of the Memorial Wall makes it impractical to photograph it in one picture. I am therefore submitting three pictures to illustrate this poignant memorial.
Inscribed "DEDICATED TO THOSE WHO FELL AND TO THOSE WHO CARRY ON", the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Sculpture was unveiled in June 2006. Among those attending the ceremony was Rudolph W. Giuliani, who was the NYC Mayor at the time of the tragedy, and he said at the unveiling "It is very hard coming here".
I can relate to those sentiments as even I, who played absolutely no role whatsoever on that dreadful day apart from watching it with disbelief on television, am consumed with emotion as I write these words.
That said, a visit to the Memorial Wall is an absolute must for anyone who goes to New York as they will feel compelled to pay their respects to those who FDNY personnel who lost their lives when they responded to the inferno that engulfed the Twin Towers and ultimately led to their collapse that cut short nearly 3,000 innocent lives.
