Woah! thanks Ian, who ever came up with that idea must have had a drink before hand. Unusual given the overall height of the appliance, as Brewerys often have pipe runs and other overhead obstructions. Am guessing no low bridges in the area either. Brilliant. Thanks
Its so unusual that its perhaps a shame that the owner has converted it back to a PE. I understand it wont have been practical, but obsure and rarities are what preservation is about isn't it?!?
This was probably used more for general maintenance around the brewery with the access platform yet still retaining its role as the 'works appliance' - access platforms have the ability to be lowered to a more convenient height nearer the ground to allow people to get into the cage - its the same with ALP's you wouldn't expect to squeeze into the cage in its stowed position - you simply operate from the turret controls bring it down to the ground and access the cage then !
Picking up on Rick's valid point, perhaps also used for confined space entries during routine maintenance or production stop repair in (or on) otherwise difficult to access (or egress) vertical (or horizontal) vessels ? If I recall correctly, The Con Space Regs require those carrying out such maintenance or repairs have to have in place robust procedures, the necessary equipment and the expertise to effect an immediate rescue of anyone "in difficulty" ? A high level access port on a vertical vessel ? ... along with the brewery's own properly trained standby personnel it could well have been called upon to do the needful ?
I'm not sure what year the picture was taken, but looking at the age of the vehicles, would the confined spaces regs been in force then / or been worried about in them days? In general maintenance activities around a plant such as a brewery a mobile platform could have been very useful. The overall travelling height must of been rather limiting though!

I agree with Michael, this picture appears to have been taken in the late seventies (judging by the Bedford Dray in the background) and the confined space regs were not in force then - it is my feeling that this vehicle served a dual role - primarilary works fire appliance but also the maintainance department vehicle - as it was already fitted with a pto (power take off) and had a substantial chassis it would have been relativly simple to fit a second hand access platform to it.
By comparison, on March 5, 2010, Politico reported that "Congress and other government agencies are under a cyber attack an average of 1.8 billion times a month, a number that has been growing exponentially since President Barack Obama took office. Senate experiences more than twice as many "attacks" as DoD each day?.
