Two Ex Somerset Dennis F28's taken in Wells

Two Ex Somerset Dennis F28's taken in Wells on 4.5.09

Rear shot of 703LYA and 22FYD parked near Wells Cathedral on 04.05.09. One of my favourite pictures that I took on the day becuase its almost like turning the clock back and the two appliances are parked there on a shout.

Great photo Paul of two great appliances. Thanks for sharing.

I couldn't agree more Paul and Paul. One classic Dennis is great, two is more than twice as good!
Interesting to see such variation between two appliances of the same model - easy to see why Dennis's are often mis-identified.

Paul, your explanation of this photo is spot on! I've been looking at it for so long and have been lost in memories of my own, which is what this site is all about. I love the timber Ajax ladders, the typical chromed spotlights and power cable reels, and the easy ase-end work site with limited gauges sufficient to keep any proficient pump operator in the picture,,,,

This shot reminds me of a distinctive F24 Dennis factory demonstrator I saw one day in the drill yard at Darlington's old Borough Road Fire Station in 1958. It was being shown to an interested group of officers and firemen, so I quietly sidled up to take a look.

It had one side clad in unpainted aluminium with roller shutters and a bi-fold crew cab door, with the hose reel inside the locker above the wheel arch. The other side was painted red, with slam lockers, a hinged door and the hose reel in an open box behind the rear wheel arch.

It also had both a "Highway Patrol" siren and a bell, and demonstrating the siren seemed to be the star attraction at that moment.

I have since often wondered what happened to it, and whether it was ever sold "as is" to a brigade, or reworked so that its bodywork was consistent on both sides before it got sold...

Can any of our Dennis experts track this one down? I imagine it must have been unique.

Probably 101F24A ordered by Grimsby F.B, but not accepted, built to WPO 40975, then used as a demonstrator, re-configured to WPO 41421 and issued to Cape Hill Brewery F.B.on 4/3/1959, registered KJV 664.

Thanks, quite a story!

And then fitted with a 'cherry picker' cage by the brewery...this was removed when the appliance was sold into preservation.

See picture 25891 for KJV 644.
