Dennis F12 Leicestershire and Rutland FS LNR 900

1988 Duxford rally. Owned by B Waples at the time. For another appliance in this brigade's burgundy livery see picture 11333. Rutland was England's smallest county existing till 1974 boundary changes. Now a district council, not a true county. Covered by Leics FRS.

Petros I think this is actually an F15 although it has the more common type of body and carries a wheeled escape

Added by Rick Loudon on 17 January 2010.
Rick is correct, this is one of 4 F15s which were built to carry escapes.

Does this machine still live ???

Added by Barrie Green on 20 June 2012.
As an F15 does that mean it has a 400gall tank?

Added by Neal Glover on 21 June 2012.
and to answer my own question....yes she still lives.....chassis no 4041 Delivery date 29.03.55

Added by Barrie Green on 21 June 2012.
Neal, By and large, yes - indeed many had larger tanks, for instance, the Derbyshire ones carried 500gallons. Howver, the two Leicestershire & Rutland ones (KNR 2 & LNR 900) only carried 100gallons. The Blackburn one (HCB 400) carried 400 gallons and was a true WrE as a result. Basically, the F15 was the F12 with improved braking power. Chris: you mention 4 were built to carry escapes, my memory is going with old age, what was the fourth one please ?

Last I heard this appliance was in the ownership of a retained fireman from Stanstead fire station in Essex.

Ian, the fourth was the City of Norwich machine, HVG 999 which had it's original number transferred and became YPW 600X. It has survived and currently resides in Yorkshire.

Hi Chris, I've just looked this one up on the Dennis paperwork, and I see it was built as a pump, but clearly had escape brackets fitted, since for a time it ran as a PE with Norwich.

Added by Ian Moore on 02 July 2012.
Hello Ian, picture 28392 and picture 28393 on this site show the Norwich machine. As far as I know, it always ran as a PE. I believe it only had a 100 gallon tank so was effectively an F12 with uprated brakes.
As you will no doubt be aware, the City of Norwich also ran an F15 with the conventional body style, HCL 280.

LNR900 Pump Escape was stationed at Loughborough Fire Station on Bridge Street (Leicestershire and Rutland Fire Service. I was a fireman there 1965 - 1986. The appliance was replaced in 1969 and I did not know until a few days ago that it still existed. I have photos of it in action and on station. A wonderful appliance to drive once you got used to it! If anyone can tell me its present location and owner (with contact info)I would be very pleased. R Babington (ret)

Richard, This machine is currently for sale on a certain well known auction site! It appears that it's at a garage in Scotland, so a long way from home!

Gentleman, This is indeed an excellent appliance I did not know that Leicestershire and Rutland operated a maroon livery I am sure I have seen another brigade with this livery. As for the F.15 Dennis Chassis it had heavier cross members updated suspension for a heavier payload.

Bob

Newcastle City Brigade pre-war and Newcastle and Gateshead Joint Fire Brigade post-war both had maroon livery, with silver coachlining and red mudguards for many years, before eventually reverting to all red in - I think - the mid to late 1970s. A very elegant appearance!

One of their pre-war Leyland dual purpose pumps is illustrated on this site.

This appears appears to be a on a S African auction site!
