The 1991 Duxford Fire Engine Show guide says that this is a 1963 Land Rover with bodywork by Dennis. It was in service with Rockwell PMC Ltd of Peterborough at that time. The Baker Perkins website says this was aquired by them in 1963 and was in use until 1992 when the brigade disbanded. It was then donated to the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade.

I wonder then who converted it to forward control. I doubt Dennis did that themselves?
It states in the 1994 Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade'Interfire 1994'Programme which celebrated the 110th Anniversary of the brigade, that this appliance was a 1963 Dennis'M'Series/Landrover L4P(Light Four Wheel Drive Pump). Also, looking through a publication by the FBS from 2002 on Industrial Fire Appliances,it states that this unusual forward control Land Rover L4P fire appliance was built by Dennis.

Yes this is correct. Unfortunatly due to the area being needed for BA servicing the appliance had to go on loan to a enthusiast. we still retain our preserved Dennis f45 though.
Land Rover themselves brought out and produced a forward control version in 1962. The appliance seen here as Pete says has Dennis 'M' bodywork which means it was built by Alfred Miles, Dennis having taken over this firm in 1962. The black bodybuilder plate can be seen on the grille.

see picture 19464 for another example of the 88inch forward control from Strathleven.
Looking at the door, the rear seat passengers must have been very small and thin !

I worked at Baker Perkins and this 88"FC was part of the work brigade. As an apprentice in the arly 80s I actually cut and fitted the two external lockers beneath the offside Roller shutter under instruction for the then cheif fire office to allow for more equipment storage. The rear doors were for slim firemen ! An interesting LR.
Now back home and under restoration with the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade. Dennis started with a normal control chassis and modified the rest. We have pictures of the pre delivery state with Dennis.
Saw the appliance tonight Will, I'd be more than to willing to help with the restoration having spannered on Land Rovers before and loving them, this really gets my juices flowing! David (Jakes mate)
