This F12 was donated to the Merseyside Museum and named SID RANKIN after the chief officer. Back in the mid 70's it was still garaged at Heswall. I drove this appliance all the way to Kendal for the Cumbria Steam gathering when it was held at the County show ground in the town.
Did my recruits training on this machine in April 1973.One lad on the course held an HGV licence so he was allowed the honour of driving her out of the engine house down the forecourt swinging hard left and up the alley into the yard. This was the last but one such course held by Cheshire at Heswall. Twenty lads on the course, 16 from Cheshire, 2 from Flintshire (Jim Vaughan and Peter Jones)and 2 from Chester City (myself and Peter G. Jones). Following each really hard week of Wheeled Escapes, Merryweather Gutbuster 45', Hook Ladders the lugging the heavy rubber 5 1/2" suction hose used on this machine, canvas delivery hose, five mile runs to the beach(just to keep us fit!). Come Friday afternoon we could start to wind down by polishing this beauty and her locker contents to death! Off home at four providing there was no dust on the surface of the water in the fire buckets and the copper sparge pipes in the urinals were gleaming!Back on your head at eight on Monday. Loved every minute of it! Many thanks to Stn O Norman Lacey, Sub O George Yates, Lfm Alan Finnigan and Lfm Terry Graham for setting me up for a wonderful 34 year journey!
