City Fire station Perth Australia

Photo taken 16 September 2009

This is the existing No. 1 City Fire Station located in Hay St, Perth, Western Australia. It was opened in 1979 and was the largest fire station in the southern hemisphere at that time.

It was said the Fire & Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia (FESA), are downsizing the fire fighting side of their operations in the City to a smaller premises to allow the amalgamation of their administrative services.

The United Fire Fighters Union of WA say the new four-bay station is badly designed, unsafe and not functional. The new building has been standing idle for almost 12 months.

This looks a bit like the Car Park at Gateshead in Tyne and Wear! You know, the famous one used in the 1971 film 'Get Carter' with Michael Caine.

sorry but this has got to be the ugliest fire station i have ever seen, how did it get by the planning stage, hardly suitable to house the men and equipment of such a noble profession,it looks like a prop from'judge dread'.

Hey Colin, take a look at picture 19440, now THAT's a real crappy fire station!!?? You'll find the firies at the headquarters above are rather affectionate of their surroundings, I don't think my pic does it justice,,

At least the one in picture 19440 looks like a fire station, and not like this car park lol!

forgive me for sounding daft but where are the appliance bays on this building?

Added by Stevie Murray on 17 November 2009.
Hey Chris, there's talk of removing the front and back doors of the new station engine room, knocking down the pillars and rebuilding three sets of larger doors instead.
Stevie, you have to use a little imagination here, the appliance bays are set back to the left and right of the portchway entrance at centre. They are recessed to allow the machines to sit on the apron in the natural shade of the cleverly constructed edifice. Perth experiences temperatures in the low 40's celcus in summer, the appliances can be parked out on the apron and the crews and equipment are protected from the burning sun. It also allows for the beautiful women of the City to meander past and check out the fittest and best-looking bronzed heroes and heroine fire fighters in the entire World!!

Canning Place in Liverpool was not exactly built for its aesthetic merits either. Thankfully it been demolished. Didn't last long either

I visited Perth today and this station is in the process of being demolished. How time flies. I remember it being built.
