A brand new 'state of the art' Central Fire Station has reportedly stood idle in the city of Perth, Western Australia, for almost 12 months. The United Fire Fighters Union of WA have said the new building in Wellington St is badly designed, unsafe and not functional. They say the parking bays are too narrow and the appliance doors bang against each other.
The Fire & Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia (FESA) say they are working with the Union to reach a compromise. They have directed the fire engines be "stagger-parked" so the appliance doors will not clash together and have ordered the Union to move in by next month.
However, the Union spokesperson has said they have 'drawn a line in the sand and will not move into an unsafe building.' They have not ruled out industrial action.
Their existing Headquarters in Hay St was one of the largest Fire Stations in the southern hemisphere when commissioned in 1979. The engine bays can house 18 appliances whereas the new Central fire station has room for 4 vehicles.
The firefighters are said to be very dissatisfied with the downsize operation and the ramifications it could have to the safety of life and property, should and when a major fire occurs within the City proper.
