This appliance is featured in a Fire Brigade Society publication on Industrial Fire Appliances published back in 2002. On the outskirts of the City of Oxford was the car assembly plant at Cowley which was owned by the Rover Group,Austin Rover,British Leyland and Morris.Over the years, the plant reduced greatly in size and was later owned by B.M.W.,building the new Mini. Dating from the 1960's,this open cab Commer pumping appliance(reg-38KFC)was owned by the Pressed Steel Fisher Division of British Leyland. If you look at the picture, you can actually see the wording PSF(Pressed Steel Fisher)Fire Brigade on the lockers on the side of the appliance.

Gordon, any more info on it's current status (condition, exact location, price etc) and did you get an opportunity to take any photographs perhaps?
John I saw the machine early in the year it was still covered up, I suppose for the right price it could be for sale, I will try to find out

Hi Gordon, please don't go to any trouble on my account. This is such a unique machine that it looks like a prime restoration candidate and as such any further detail that may inspire someone to take it would naturally be a great thing.
It was still there a couple of weeks ago when I visited last - its been there about six years and was bought from a sale at the Yorkshire showground in Harrogate - its covered over and, as anyone who knows this yard owner - (who is very approachable - once you know him) its likely to stay that way !
Andy,at this time can't find any info relating to the vehicle you've mentioned.Have you got the registration of the vehicle,or any other details such as when it was in use with the PSF Plant. Can't promise anything, but I will continue to see what I can find.Pete.

Many thanks Pete. The reg is MFC 66G. Didn't know they had an AEC. Didn't they run that awful Morris Minor thing?
Andy, they did a one off Morris Minor inside the plant as a First Strike Reg.TFC953,narrow enough to get between this production lines,it carried extinguishers,"window cleaners"ladder and little else. I agree awful is the word for it,its preserved now. I think this Commer would have been ideal for seaside firecrews in the summer!
Looking at the front scuttle, this Commer dates from about 1959/61. In 1973 PSF ran the Commer, 38 KFC, Morris Minor, TFC953, AEC, MFC66G and an open Leyland PE.
Patrick, Alfred Miles, were swallowed up by Dennis in the early 1960's, with some Miles designs being produced as the 'Dennis M'. Miles last works' were in Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham and then the old Gloster Aircraft site at Brockworth.
There were two physically separate works brigades at Cowley: the Morris one was where the AEC 'MFC' replaced the big Morris appliance, was it not? At some point in the '60s, the PSF brigade had switched to Land Rovers. The PSF site is where BMW has developed Mini production. The Morris FS was off the south western end of Hollow Way, near the original 1913-era car assembly building.
