Dusty, thank you for this information. I was hoping that this would be case. A friend is restoring a Sulzer fire pump which is marked up as from Oxford Fire Brigade. He was hoping that it might of had a more glorius background than just from a trailer pump. As all the Dennis Merryweather Tl's had the Sulzer pumps fitted, quite possibly it came from GLW435.
Several British fire brigades including London had Metz and/or Magirus TLs in service during WWII, which they acquired in the late 1930s. I was told by fire officers in Darlington, my home town, that during the war they had trouble getting anyone to service their "Nazi" Magirus ladder, but that for some reason spare parts were always available!
I do not think the German fire service had any Merryweathers, so they presumably did not have the same problem.
Barry From what I have seen in photos the former TrPs fitted to TLs had the casing modified on one side with a flat panel. If your friends Sulzer has the same bonnet on both sides it stayed as a TrP. Unless of course somone knows differently.
The Sulzer pump in question is now on this site (picture 33880). It does have one flat sided panel so possibly this does point more towards the TL. If anyone has any photos of a Sulzer trailer pump or more information about GLW435 it would be great to hear from them. In the mean time I will have a chat with some colleagues in Oxford Fire and Rescue and see if they have someone there that might have any info.
From, Wheels of Fire, The NFS "bible" written by Alan House:- The orders for medium Sulzers were superceded by Harlands so there were never many of them. There is a photo on page 195. It was in 1947 that the 1st conversions to pumps for TLs began. From the photos it appears almost certain that the preserved one is off a TL, most likely a Home Office Dennis Merryweather or a Leyland TD7.
GLW433 for searching. Notice in the background of this photo the premises of Charles Jones. They were agricultural engineers in Chester city centre. The later Charles was a great fire engine enthusiast whom I met in the 1970s and there is a tribute to him here
Wonder how this old girl made out, in Hitler's War; breaking out within months of the photo ?
