Trans Pennine Run August 2008 - 1930 Dennis The Historic Commercial Vehicle Society organises a run from Manchester to Harrogate each year. The run takes you over the Pennine hills, so there are plenty of long steep climbs to make your engine work hard.
Making its first appearance on the Trans Pennine run was this 1930 Dennis Low load pump escape. Engines of this vintage employ a total loss cooling system when pumping. When pumping cold water from the main fire fighting water pump is fed into the radiator displacing the hot water which runs out of the radiator overflow. To help to cool the engine after the long climbs and in stationary traffic the pump was engaged feeding water from the 50 gallon hosereel tank into the engine. This kept the engine on the safe side of boiling! For next year a re-cored radiator to restore the correct cooling efficiency will be fitted.
