Trans Pennine Run August 2008 - 1965 Austin Gypsy

The Historic Commercial Vehicle Society organises a run from Manchester to Harrogate each year. The run takes you over the Pennine hills, so there are plenty of long steep climbs to make your engine work hard.

This like the Green Goddess formed part of the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS)in Britain.

Thats correct, the long wheeled based Austin Gypsy models were ordered in large amounts for the AFS and were used as personnel carrier's and radio repeater units, and in actual fact some were'nt actually disposed of until 2006-18 years after the disbanding of the Auxillary Fire Service.

The Gypsy also saw service with factory and industrial fire brigades - as well as a few counties - as an L4P pump. There are several photos of these relatively rare units on this site. They had a compact front mounted 500 IGPM pump, a small water tank with a hose reel system and could accommodate a crew of four.
