Trans Pennine Run August 2008 - Dennis SS

The Historic Commercial Vehicle Society organises a run from Manchester to Harrogate each year. The run takes you over the Pennine hills, so there are plenty of long steep climbs to make your engine work hard. The fire engine entries were down this year, however this Dennis was a late entry and therefore did not appear in the programme.

The chequer markings on the bottom of the doors is unusual. Can anyone identify this livery?

I may of course be wrong, but perhaps the chequer effect is not original and has been added to help disguise the notorious rusting of the lower parts of the door. I may also stand corrected as this is just a guess (and not informed by a fleetlist) but the all over red an stripping looks rather East Sussex?

Well according to my list its ex-Isle of Wight fire brigade, a Dennis DS151 (You can tell its a DS by the single headlights on either side). So working on that basis then the chequers were added afterwards as I dont believe Isle of Wight used that kind of livery on their vehicles.

Correct, it is indeed a DS, and it was in fact an ex-demonstrator. Just to confirm, the chequers were not original.

Isle of Wight, of course. So nice to see it in preservation, I remember these as a kid. They always used to really look after their machines and they were kept comparably in service for a very long time (I am sure I looked through the bay doors at Yarmouth in the late 1980's and they had two split screen Bedford TK's PE's with sequential number plates, one was front line and the other carried an escape that was used as a FSNBF mascot!). The IOW FRS had some Bedford CSV's and these Dennis DS's that were in white, with red striping and looked fantastic for it, it really suited them. In fact there was a white DS on e-bay in the last 12 months that looked in great condition fresh from service it seemed and I really hope it made it in to preservation to. But it's original colour scheme was such that it would have appealed to a limo owner being quite apt for wedding work.
P.S I must admit to feeling guilty at the reference to the chequers hiding the unmentionable, it was not intended as a slur against this machine which in fact looks to be in fine fettle and as I am so pleased to see a machine from a brigade that is rarity on the preservation seen.
