I believe Baker Perkins is no more. That is a travesty. No more V8-540's to grace our ears.

Andrew BAKER PERKINS built bakery equipment, PERKINS ENGINES is a different Company, they stopped making V8 engines years ago, to hear a V8 find a diesel powered Dodge or Dennis.

Thanks Pete. I bet Frank Perkins will be turning if he knew I said that. Not many Dodge's or RS/SS left in service now so it's down to the old videos I shot.

The original Perkins V8 510 was found in the Ford D1617 and D1317 fire appliance chassis, the first series of ERF appliances and contemporary Dennis F series units, while later Perkins V8s were installed in other Dennis, Dodge and Shelvoke chassis.

The six cylinder Perkins was also an option in the Dennis D series too, as an alternative to the unreliable and thirsty Jaguar 4.2 petrol offering.

So, one fire brigade station could theoretically have three different Dennises, a Ford, a Dodge and a Shelvoke in its appliance room - all with Perkins diesel engines.

The Ford appliances came with their own badged up Black Ford V8 , according to one CFO who will not be named or brigade told me " the new Ford appliances have a better V8 engine than the ones in our Dodge appliances " I told him "that was rubbish"! And I proved it when I next met him at a meeting , working at Perkins I acquired off the V8 assembly line 1 plain rocker cover , 1 FORD RCA, 1 perkins oil filter 1 formoco, 1 perkins engine built strip where info is stamped on and 1 formoco got a pass out to take off site then showed him the items they had bought a whole lot of spare engine parts for their Ford V8 they did not need because they already had the spares left over from the Dodge V8 engines!
