The only merc in Gloucestershire. Glad they decided not to get any more & go for the dennis again. I guess this beast will be replaced soon by a man or dennis if they are lucky!
Nope it`s just come back from workshops where the pump had a complete overhaul, so looks like i`ll be driving this for a while yet, when the Dennis, callsign 121 gets replaced we will have that. When thats going to be, , , , , your guess is as good as mine.
Living proof if any was ever needed that you can't convert a normal commercial vehicle into a fire appliance, just how soon will the number crunchers realise this ?
Can't believe this machine is still on the run & not been replaced. The Dennis at Cirencester is getting on a bit aswell. Come on Glos Fire give the guys a shiny new appliance hopefully summut decent.
New isnt always best these days, designed by car drivers not appliance/bus/lgv drivers. Never driven a Merc appliance, but drove Volvo, Dennis R/RS and Dodge. Drive Dennis/Merc/Volvo Council trucks now, our new Dennis Binwagons are trash(pardon the pun!) poorly built, bad steering lock and a reliability I hope Fire & Rescue service will never have to suffer. My Dodge/Carmichael "Sunday best" is lovely after that all week!
This was new to GFRS I believe it was the first Mercedes Atego fire engine put into service, maybe someone clarify this. It was originally the wholetime pump but they soon had it replaced with another Sabre and the merc moved over to the second pump manned by the retained.
Mercedes are standard issue in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid and many other fire services all over the UK, Europe and further overseas. What are all these organizations missing? They are presumably missing Dennis, if indeed you can still buy a Dennis fire engine.
We are going to be getting Strouds first away later this year to replace the merc, an 11 plate Scania, sister appliance of Cirencesters wholetime pump.

Would like to come and photograph this doult I will have time now.
Cirencester was offered the new Scania but we thought it better to let Stroud Have it and us have there’s and There’s a good reason for that my friend. The two Scanias at ciren and Stroud were made by JDC where as the rest in the service including the new ones are made by Emergency one. The main difference being the pump controls layout and the way the pumps work. Therefore it was decided that being as we (the Retained) in ciren ride the wholetime truck in the evening it made much better sense for us to have the two pumps in the county that are the same, so we can inter change more easy. Bit long winded but I hope you got the gist of it.
