F46 BWU 714H, the replacement for the white F46 EWU 755H previously shown outside Sowerby Bridge fire station, this one had been painted red as was the practice in West Yorks to standardise the fleet.

What a classic. I may have said it before, but I feel that the styling of these front´s by Dennis really give those machines that wore them a great profile and all round well balanced look. A Dennis, Rolls Royce powered and red it´s the epitomy of the British fire engine.

Yes, gotta agree with John D. - a Classic British Fire Engine.

Compact shape, practical short wheel-base, all the gear stowed neatly and securely in lockers, no clutter, full crew-cab neatly styled in[styled those rear doors neatly], even the tilted ladder stowage works for the truck's lines; and the classic front that is unmistakably Fire Engine, when you see it in road-traffic.

In North America - I don't think the designers were ever successful at moving the crew from riding the rear-step, up to the full crew-cab forward. Speaking aesthetics only, of course. We now have those big, boxy, structures with full-height doors, sticking up behind the driver's position.

Aesthetics only, Fire Equipment must always be extremely functional, good ergonomics, up-to-date technology, and of course, the Crew's Safety is paramount....

For contrast, you should go look at Picture 7539, Engine 4, a 1990's Sutphen pumper of Cleveland, OHIO - for The Classic American Pumper.

A beauty in its own right - I am definitely not going to argue the one against the other !

Thanks again - makes this a great 'Site to visit.

Regards,

I drove this F46. She spent her last working days at Heckmodwike Fire Station, until the station was closed in 1984. The Station building is still standing on the High Street, but not in use has a Fire Station. I have a photo of it awaiting its sale at FSHQ
