North Eastern Fire Brigade Commer GAV575E

This NEFB/Grampian Commer Carmichael Appliance served at Keith Retained Station before moving to the Volunteer station at Gordonstoun Boarding School. Tthen it became one of the spare appliances before being bought by a local papermill. Then a mill employee bought it and now keeps it in excellent condition. Pictured 18/5/2008 at BA Stores Dunecht open day/Vintage Tractor show.

Looks just as good as it must have done when first delivered half a century ago!

Carmichael was unique among British fire engine body manufacturers with this design. They built virtually identical appliances on Albion, Bedford, Commer, Dodge, Ford, Karrier and Leyland chassis.

The first ones appeared around 1964 and I think the production of this series lasted until about 1980. Maybe a Carmichael historian knows the exact dates?

This did not stop the firm building a lot more units on various truck manufacturers' standard cabs, nor inhibit their development of other custom cabs and bodies on a number of Bedford bare chassis.

All of these were municipal trucks, of course, and they simultaneously produced a wide range of airport crash trucks too....
