Volkswagen Fire appliance ECW 293W

On viewing this website I came across a mention of Volkswagen engines in use at The Hague, NL. At a transport rally at Woodvale, near Liverpool on 6-8-00, I saw a VW fire appliance registered ECW 293W and wondered if you knew anything about it. All my enquiries have drawn a blank and most appliance owners I've asked seem reluctant to discuss engines in general. Have you or any of your visitors any knowledge of the engine in question? Regards, Peter

Thanks Daren. I have visited the Merseyside fire engine museum. Although they couldn't help with this one they showed me their own Volkswagen engine similar to mine. They have made an excellent job of restoring their engine. I can recommend a visit to this museum,

What an interesting build - making a "Vee-Dub" into a Mini-Pumper - great work.

Hi I'm trying too find history of my VW fire engine. Np ABH292C. Any help please

One of these was displayed at the Earls Court Commercial Vehicle show in 1967. The selling pitch was that it had a 100 gallon tank, which could "put out 99% of all fires". It had a rear-mounted Coventry Climax pump of about 1000 LPM capacity, a short ladder, space for five (skinny) crew, and very little locker space. Of course, it met no JCDD specs, so if any were sold, it would be mainly to industrial fire brigades. It was on the Pyrene stand, who was then well known for foam systems (which the VW did not carry) and hand extinguishers.

This may be the one that served at a mental hospital somewhere in Lancs. If it is the same one it was owned by a VW rather than a fire enthusiast. I have not seen it for several years so may have been sold.

I think it might be. They also had a Land Rover/Carmichael Redwing L4P JOA166N which I saw at Fire Fest '92 in Tatton Park.

see also pictures #27278 and #27276. This might be Branbridge (later Spenklin Branbridge)bodywork? There is more on this site about this fire engineering co.
