Ladder 62 -- FDNY??? A Pierce?

The fact is, this is the only Pierce Aerial carrying the colors of FDNY. However, the aerial apparatus has no regular station -- and it's crew is made up of an acting ensemble from the highly controversial FX series "Rescue Me," starring Denis Leary.

The rig is on loan to the filmmakers from Pierce and is seen each week by millions. The wheelbase and overall length of the apparatus are far longer than standards set by the FDNY, and it would have difficulty manuevering some New York City's narrow one-way streets.

It looks real nice!!

I think they might have used either spare/training Seagrave rearmount 100ft ladders for the second and third seasons, because they used another Pierce for the first season.

No they didnt they used a e-one with a 1000/500 pump

Does anyone know if rescue me will be using a new engine 99?

Added by JOHN HOPPER on 13 February 2009.
This is strictly a "show" truck. I actually saw it at the Pierce Manufacturing plant in Appleton, WI in Feb. 2009. It was cool to actually see it. Pierce is making headway with FDNY as the new Rescues are made by Pierce.

Added by Kevin on 18 February 2009.
According to a friend who works for Seagrave Sales & Service, the vendor for the FDNY, Engine 99 is usually a rig that has been received, but not in service yet.
Because ladders are fewer & very expensive, over $1, 000, 000 they are processed right thru and placed in service so they aren't avalible.
However he didn't know why the show chose to use Pierce instead of Seagrave which is the vendor for FDNY.

As far as it being strictly a show truck, don't bet on it. The Ladder used in Third Watch is currently in use as a front line piece with the Lopatcong Township New Jersey Fire Dept.

This aerial has been purchased by the Telford Volunteer Fire Company in Montgomery/Bucks County PA. It is currently being outfitted for delivery by Pierce. Expected delivery is April 2009.

09/02/09 I just had the pleasure of driving this fire truck. I picked it up in Plattsburg NY an drove it to Queens Long Island New York for more filming of RESCUE ME.This fire truck is huge an drives an rides like a Cadillac its a fantastic fire truck to drive.Getting around the streets wasn't to bad until i got on 9th street cars parked on both sides of the one way street it got real tight an interesting but we got through it with out a scratch. Another job well done by PIERCE.I don't no anything about it being sold but i do no the fire company that gets it is going to love having this truck in there department.

What kind of truck is this because on the pierce website its an Arrow XT but you look at it here it looks like a Dash or a Lance ?

Added by Brandon on 19 September 2009.
We have the exact same truck on our departnent! Excellent truck!

Added by Michael Wright on 13 November 2009.
You guys need to learn more about the FDNY. We currently have ONE and only ONE Pierce rescue in our fleet and thank god because its junk. Pierce will not cooperate with us and build anything to our specs. Instead Seagrave will continue to make pumpers, mid-mounts and Ferrara god help us is making the new rear mounts.

Added by Captain FDNY on 20 November 2009.
Captain FDNY,why after all these years are the FDNY about to change to Ferrara for there Rearmounts?,another cost-cutting exercise maybe?.We know Mack and ALF went years ago,but the FDNY have had Seagrave for the last fourty years, and actually apparatus from Seagrave goes back even further in the history of the FDNY.

Added by Pete Matten on 20 November 2009.
Pierce is not a horrible manufacturer they at least make trucks over 100' unlike seagrave when the trucks don't even come pre-piped either. FDNY should be happy that someone offering them something good and take it.And if ferrara gives the FDNY 107' trucks they better be kissing there feet.

Added by Brandon on 22 November 2009.
Brandon:
You are misinformed about the process. The FDNY won't be kissing anyone's feet. Companies don't offer things to us and we don't get excited to get them. WE spec a rig to our specifications. We want someone to BUILD a rig that WE design. Ferrara met the spec and beat Seagrave's price. If we wanted pre-piped waterways, then we'd get them and Seagrave or whomever else would have built it. We don't spec pre-piped ladders, we don't want pre-piped, it's no good for us. That's that.

It makes NO difference who's name is on the rig. It doesn't matter who puts the parts together. The company that wins the bid is building a rig that was designed in conjunction with FDNY Research & Development Unit along with others in the Dept.

Pierce doesn't build our rigs because they don't bid on them. The FDNY spec is too tight and some companies feel they have enough business without retooling a whole production line to meet FDNY spec. They tried with a one-off unit for R-1. That is the only Pierce that see's city service. It has not faired well, by many accounts. Perhaps it just wasn't built with the proper components to handle the run volume and weather and road condtions of New York. There aren't many rigs that Pierce has built that see the use and abuse that R-1's rig sees.

hello again for those of you who don't know that ladder 62 has been replaced with a new ladder 62 the old ladder 62 was returned to pierce so it could be made ready for its new home. I know this has to be true because I'm the one that delivered the new fire truck and picked up the old fire truck

Added by Dave on 03 December 2009.
Ok maybe they dont want pierce but you cant say a fire truck manufacturer is horrible they are here to serve the world just like ferrara and seagrave. They make pretty good fire trucks to and other companys appreciate what they have bought.

Added by Brandon on 04 December 2009.
Brandon, it's as if Pierce is a relative.

They're not here to serve the world, they're here to make money. This isn't charity.

The most important thing to remember is, if a rig sucks, it's probably because the wasn't spec'd very well. The engine's are made by one company. The trans., another. The pumps are made by yet another third party as well as other parts like the seats, doors, aeriel, ect, ect.

The name of the manufacturer means very little. means very little.

Added by FDNY Boogie Down on 04 December 2009.
I'd have to disagree with you Boogie. I know some departments swear by their: Pierce, E-Ones, Smeal, etc. because to them the name stands for the truck(s) they want and love. I know of others that either won't touch one of the afore mentioned manufacturers because of the name.

Added by David on 04 December 2009.
I'm not saying the whole world and I'm not talking about the money. I'm just saying you cant say a manufacturer is horrible by the way they design there trucks. That's the way they do there trucks and they have a problem with the way they do it.

Added by Brandon on 05 December 2009.
My Fire Dept might have this ladder truck. Roberts Park Fire Dept, Justice IL.

I wonder what would happen if this rig was driving down the road with it's actor crew and they came across a real going fire

I am proud to say that Truck 62 has made it's way to become a part of the Indianapolis Fire Dept. fleet. It is in service as Ladder 29 in Garfield Park District of Indianapolis. It still wears the striping from the show and little modification was done to the striping on the truck to make it work. it still has the logo from the show on the truck with the girl riding the truck and it says "hell on wheels" . This truck also still bears the names on the side "in remembrance of" and then followed by four names. I will try to get some picks.

I have a question, If the Pierce ladder truck would be to big for some roads, how come the FDNY has a Pierce Heavy Rescue Truck that looks similar in size?

Added by Trooper336 on 04 December 2010.
Trooper336, this apparatus is much the same size as any normal aerial and rescue unit used today with the FDNY.Actually, going back to the 1980's, various aerials used by the department were very much larger, and certainly longer then this Pierce rearmount.
In 1980/81, 2 Sutphen 1250gpm/100'Tower Ladders were purchased and went to Ladder Companies 14 and 119.Then again in 1984(delivered 1985), 2 American LaFrance/LTI 1500gpm/100'Tower Ladders were purchased and these went to, again Ladder Company 14, and Ladder Company 163.These were in actual fact much longer then this Pierce, especially as they had a bucket(cage)that overhung the cab of the apparatus by around 8/9feet.
Today, the Seagrave 100ft Towers, and Seagrave 100ft rearmounts in use with the FDNY both being twin rear axle units are in fact simular in size to this Pierce.

Added by Pete Matten on 04 December 2010.
Thank you for the info :)

Added by Trooper336 on 05 December 2010.
How many units were there? If Roberts Park has one and so does the Indianapolis Fire Dept could there be more than two? Does anyone know?

Added by Martin on 19 May 2011.
Just wait until FDNY gets their new Ferrara hook and ladder trucks. I'd go with a Pierce before a Ferrara any day. Buffalo, NY uses a lot of Pierce's and the weather there is worse than in NYC! Anyway, like Chicago and many other F.D.'s who lowered their standards and got cheap and purchased E-Ones years ago! Talk about pure JUNK! Anaheim, CA dumped their E-ones after just a few years in service and so did many other F.D.'s nationwide! You get what you pay for!!! Selling out QUALITY is the "in" thing today! Boston likes E-ones and nobody knows why!?! I think FDNY will learn a hard lesson here but, you never know. The tax payers and Firemen will be the ones left holding the bag and the bill in the end if they don't work out! When rigs are in the shop more then in service, was it worth taking the lower bid to save a few bucks? Now, a Department is paying more for less in down time! Parts alone are very costly to say the least, too!

LAFD, here in CA, have Pierce apparatus which are referred to by the Firemen as "Pierce's of crap." Now, LAFD snubbed Seagrave again after many years, and are purchasing KME's! (CHEAPER and better?) LACoFD has had nothing but problems with their early KME's. The new KME's are slightly better but, like Ferrara and E-one, they will NEVER be an Ahrens-Fox, Crown, Mack, Maxim, Pirsch, Seagrave, Sutphen, or Van Pelt!

$1, 000, 000 for what? Hell, I'll put a Model TT Ford up against some of the crap manufactured today and still get the fire put out without all the fanfare, nonsense and dirty politics involved!

Today, if I were a City, County, or State agency, or a Fire Chief, Seagrave would be the 1st. choice for dependable fire apparatus. PERIOD! Hang the cost! But, Pierce would be the 2nd. choice if it came down to nickels and dimes in the process but, NO others! Enough said. Thank you.

Roberts Park has Ladder 62 which is now in service as Ladder 31. I was doing ride time there when the truck was delivered and it still has some of the shows markings on it.

This is the caption under the photo of the truck on their apparatus page:
"Ladder 31: 2008 Pierce EXT chassis, 100 ft. aluminum ladder. This truck was featured in the FX series "Rescue Me", seasons 5 and 6."

Added by Medicchick on 14 September 2011.
Its simple politics why fdny doesn't use pierce. Many people have heard talk of coruption between fdny and seagrave/fwd corp for many years. Also a side note both pierce and seagrave are wisconsin companies located not far apart, they have the same workforce to pool from. Pierce is non-union however yet more people want to work there than seagrave. Consider quality if pierce gets the pick of the better people from the workforce wouldn't they have the better product as well.
