does a fire truck have water already in it on does it use fire hydrants?

the appliance in this picture holds 1800 litres water and yes if the water runs out they do use fire hydrants to fill up the appliance.

Both - a truck like this would probably have a 1500-1800 tank which would be used to 'first attack' until the appliance could be connected to a hydrant.

Yes, all pumping appliances carry water, on this size appilance the tank will hold 400 gallons, 1, 800 litres, and also use water from hydrants.

Hi Robert - Most fire trucks have enough water in them to start the pumps and use the hoses while they are still connecting to the hydrant, but the hydrant needs to be hooked up quickly before the fire trucks run out of water. Regards - Lou (Darwin, Australia)
