why would you need one of these at an incident?

Things have a habit of breaking down at protracted incidents. It`s common practice for brigades to mobilise mechanics and comms technicians to large jobs. Far better having a mechanic standing by at a job where there are a lot of resources deployed than something break down while its in use and then have to wait for him to turn up at the job.

Pumps working hard means more chance of something braking down. I have lost count the amount off jobs I have been on when some appliance has suffered a defect of some sort that means it goes off the run.

Presumably it is better to repair a defect if you can rather than turn out a replacement appliance in an area with far flung stations.

at a large scale incident, the mechanic would monitor fuel consumption on the appliances plus be on hand should any go 'tech' thus alleviating the need to wait any period of time for duty mechanic to arrive.
