MAJ 921F Is owned and run by Glenn Webber. The appliance is kept in South Wales, along with LBO 100F, which is owned by the Mid and West Wales preservation group. MAJ was built in 1968 and is 1 of only 12 built. She served with North Yorkshire until leaving active service in 1986. While in service the appliance also attended the York Minster fire.

As a young boy I remember this TL coming new to Scarborough (we lived diagonally opposite the Fire Station on North Marine Road). It replaced an older T/L.

A friend of mine's dad was a fireman at Scarborough at the time and we spent a lot of time over at the fire station. We were once in the back of this T/L when it got called out with the Pump and PE to a shout (an AFA at Boyes store on Queen Street). The driver jomped in and didn't realise we were hiding in the rear. So we got a lift on blues and two's to Queen St. We had to walk back though so a good job the shout was not to too far away!

From what I can remember, Scarborough at the time had this T/L, A Pump Escape, A pump and a retained Pump.

The retained pump (A Dennis although I can't recall if it was a F7 or F8 or whatever) had the registration KPY666 (it was nicknamed 'the devil' by some.).

The full time pump was a Bedford and the PE was a Dennis.

In the early to mid 70's the PE, and both the retained pump and full time pump were replaced by 'new' Bedfords.

The Dennis PE went into the 'Fire Exhibition' which was open in the end Bay (nearest to Castle Road). I seem to recall its registration was HPY160 or similar. There was also an old horse drawn 'steam' appliance in the exhibition, all I can remember about that was that it put out its last ever fire at Charm Park Hutton Bushell many years previously.

Later on Scarborough got a yellow Commer Walk through van with 'Air Van' written upon it. I am not sure what its purpose was as I only ever saw it get called out once.

Anyway, its great to see that this T/L is still about. I would love to meet up with it again sometime, if only to recall the 'ride to Boyes' I and my mate had so many years ago.

Hi Peter, great story many thanks for sharing. Do you have any old fire engine photos you could share. Paul.

Hi Paul,

I will have a sort out in a few weeks (am moving house again in three weeks time so eveything is either packed up or getting packed up for the move) and see if I have kept any pictures or the negatives. I remember as a boy I used to take loads of photos and I am sure I kept a few pictures of the three then 'new' Bedfords lined up outside of the fire station as well as some older ones of the retained pump KPY666 at a fire at the Durham Hotel on North Marine Road (the full time pumps were out on a shout when the call came in) and some of the old Bedford Pump at a house fire in Durham Street.

I know I also did have quite a few pictures of this T/L in action when the then Olympia building on Scarborough Seafront burnt down in the mid 70's.

Sadly in 1979 we moved away from North Marine Road and I never bothered much with the fire engines much after that until I very recently found this site.

Anyway, when I get moved I will have a sort out and hope I kept the old photos. I am moving to Northallerton so will in the future always keep the digital camera handy!!

Re my previous post above and the yellow Commer 'Air Van' I seem to recall being told at the time that it came from York if that makes any sense. It was later replaced by a Ford ET.

Paul,
A little more information as regars Scarborough of yesteryear ! KPY 666 was their Dennis F8. The PE was an F7,and there's a bit of a story to it. Believe it or not, this was delivered new to ICI Wilton, and purchased from them by North Riding FB in 1959. The Air-Van (which was yellow from the word 'go') was an ET - and was registered GAJ 421D. I photographed it at Northallerton when it was stationed there.

hi mr moore do you have a pic of the ici dennis

Ian, nice to have some new information on the ICI Wilton F7, can you confirm the registration was HPY 190? I have read that this was the last F7 built (not counting the rebuilt F14/F7 that was GSA 999).

I made a slight error with the registration number in my first posting above, it was HPY 190 that was the Pump Escape in the 'fire exhibition' at Scarborough Fire Station in the 1970's.

I didn't realise the significance of this appliance at the time (well I was only about 10 years old at the time) but I certainly climbed over this fire engine a number of times when it was in the exhibition.

Ian Moore,

Many thanks for the info regarding both KPY 666 and HPY 190.

I spent very many happy childhood hours at the fire station when these two, as well as the T/L in the photo above and the later Bedfords were on the run at Scarborough.

Thanks also for the info re the Commer 'Air Van'.

When I get moved I will dig out any photos and other info that I have (hopefully) kept from the period.

Hi Peter.

Thanks for your reply and the information you have sent. I hope you manage to find some photos and look forward to seeing them. Good look with the move.

Hi Ian.

Many thanks for the information on Scarborough station from the past, Im always interested in any info from North Yorks area. I didn't know about the 'Air Van' Ive never seen any photos of this appliance. I know York City had a Commer Walk Thru as a Salvage Tender (5001 DN) but not the other. Thanks again and hope your on the mend. Paul.
