Sad to see such an appliance in the state it's in. I hope all the crew survived, and no one was injured. 2 questions i have for you re this photo, 1, how did the appliance end up like that and 2, is it possible to e-mail me a copy of this picture in a larger size? Thanks, John.
this was the urban pumper that was destroyed in the Canberra firestorm in 2003. Im sure this was because the truck's filter caught on fire due to the embers. Other fire crews also had problems such as engine failure. I think the pumper's wheel hub, was donated to the National Museum of Australia.

Luckily all crew survived as they were out of the Vehicle at the time of ignition due to engine failure from intense heat due to the filter catching alight. I believe they have all been upgraded since with a protected system.
Yeah we had the same problem here in SA, one of ours caught fire while at a grass fire, thankfully it was put out straight away. All have new filters and haven't had any issues since.
Thankfully the crew survived, pity it could all have been prevented eh. Hope the lessons are remembered well. I have been privileged to see raw news footage of that particular incident and things were certainly out of hand. Hats off to the determination and bravery of crews soldiering on when they had obviously lost the battle.
