This TTL started life on a Dodge G16 chassis back in 1986. Its registration number was C310 JEP. It entered operational service in Swansea City Centre and ended its Operational Service at Morriston station. The reason for its disposal was a reduction in Aerial Appliances from 8 to 4, and it was replaced with an identical Appliance, G646 ABX, Metz DLK30 on a Scania Chassis. The reason for the re chassis was mechanical problems with the Dodge Chassis, mainly power steering ram problems which kept failing so regularly, that a decision was eventually made to re house the ladders on a modern chassis, hence Scania G429 KBO.

Hi David,

From the 'depths of my mind' I believe you are or were the transport manager of Mid and West Wales Fire Service, I have to say its so refreshing for somebody in your position to take an interest in the appliances and their history, thank you .

David,
So should the database - which states that C310 JEP was an accident write-off - therefore be amended to reflect your above comments ?

If i remember rightly, i was told or read somewhere that the chassis cab on this vehicle was originally bought by a farmer and was used to take produce to a market, i know for certain this was one of only 3 machines in the North Yorkshire fleet that had a manual gearbox, the other 2 being the water bowsers.

I was once informed by a driver of this appliance that the gearbox was difficult to use until the appliance was warmed up then then went like a rocket !

I am not aware of any article in reference to C310 JEP being a write off, it definitely was not.
Where is this article, I would like to read it.

This appliance is no longer owned by North Yorkshire fire and rescue service. It has been sold to Lothian and Borders fire service in Scotland and is at present at their workshops. That means that this appliance has served in Wales, England and Scotland could this be a first for a Turntable ladder. Paul.

Cheers for that Paul, what do North Yorks have as a spare now to provide high rise cover if a machine fails ?

Added by John Johnstone on 18 May 2009.
I hear that workshops may be using it for parts rather than put it on the run

Hi Paul i wonder which station in Edinburgh this appliance will be going to? Sighthill replacing the E reg TL or Tollcross replacing the F reg TL?

Added by Grant Melville on 18 May 2009.
John, I believe NY have a new ALP on a Mercedes Econic chassis that will allow X142AAJ to become the reserve aerial.
Grant, I belive this TL is to be used like D240ELJ was as the reserve TL as D240ELJ has had problems of late so it is more likely that it will be canabalised for spare parts.

John, North Yorkshire do not have a spare aerial appliance at the moment, this TL has not been used for more than a year now. They make do with what thay have, if Scarborough's ALP goes off the run they sometimes call on Humberside and they send their aerial from Bridlington or York being in the middle(ISH) of the County cover by going on stand by at Malton.
Grant, reading the other comments on this appliance it may be broke up for spares, which is a shame. Perhaps Stevie can keep us informed. Paul.

Regarding G429KBO I was a fire fighter with West Glamorgan Fire Service and drove this appliance from new. We now have a fire museum in the Swansea Area and would like to see this appliance come back to it's original home if no-one now has a use for it or at least be given first refusal if possible.
If anyone can help me with this wish I would be very grateful
In anticipation

This appliance is still sitting at L&B`s workshops at Newbridge on the west side of Edinburgh. It`s sitting in a line with F986 NRV the TL bought from Hampshire and D240 ELJ the TL bought from Dorset. I have a pic somewhere of the 3 appliances at workshops which i`ll post on here.

Thanks D Cruikshank for the photo of the Ex Swansea TL at Newbridge.
Do you know if this vehicle is roadworthy and if not what had been removed from it?
I would still like to obtain this vehicle, hopefully as a donation for our museum, whatever it's condition.
Hoping someone can help me out!

Alan - does this Swansea Museum have a website ?

Thank you

I`m afraid i`m unsure what state the TL is in, but it`s external condition doesn`t look too bad . It`s never been used operationally by L&B but I suspect they`ve probably taken parts from it to keep their other Metz TL`s in use.

No. Not as yet. It is in the throws of being sorted out. I'll let you know asap. Hopefully early in the new year
