How many calls do Preston Circus do a year? Anyone know?

Added by Peter Bromley on 06 January 2009.
Preston Circus respond to approximately 3, 500 calls each year.

O right so quite busy then, in Suffolk our busiest station is Princes Street in Ipswich but they only do around 1, 500 calls a year. Interesting how it varies from brigade to brigade. Soho Fire Station in London last year turned out to over 6, 200 shouts!!!!!!!!

Hi Pete. I'm not sure if it's still the case, but approximately 15 years ago, I believe Soho was the busiest dedicated fire station in the world. What I mean by 'dedicated' is it is a fire response station only. I know of New York stations that perhaps turnout more frequently, but as is the norm in the US, FDNY respond to an awful lot of EMS medical calls, and being a fire buff, I don't think they should count!

I wonder if any member can lay claim to knowing the world's busiest FIRE ONLY station of recent times. I'd be very interested to know whether it is London's Soho.

This has got me thinking . . . I'm now wondering what the busiest Wholetime, Day-Crewed and Retained stations in the country are. And, conversely, which are the quietest. Anyone know of any possible candidates?

To get the ball rolling, Staffordshire's busiest are W/T: Hanley with 2500, D/C: Tamworth with 1900 & R/T: Rugeley with 600. The quietest are W/T: Burton-upon-Trent with 1200, D/C: Kidsgrove with 450 and R/T: Longnor with 40.
Please note: all figures are approximate.

Suffolks Busiest W/T: Princess Street 1500, D/C: Haverhill 384, R/T: Sudbury 334
Quietest W/T: Normanshurst 750, D/C: Newmarket 314, R/T: Orford 27

(All figures correct)

Notice Sudbury (The busiest retained station turnout to more shouts than the quiet day crewed station of Newmarket!!

That is some city fire-hall.

It is located down-town, 3 stories, brick, and local land-mark; where 5 streets meet at unequal angles; and is fitted into the largest-angled corner, with 9 (nine - count 'em) doors along a curving front; the Trucks can depart on 2 different streets.

I search-engined "preston circus fire station image" to see it; but perhaps, a Devoted Reader could post a picture up here for us - it is certainly quite an idea for its day (1938).

BTW "Circus" is a term for that kind of road-intersection; doesn't always mean the 3-ring type, under a tent; with a Ring-Master and scantily-clad beauties atop performing elephants......

Harvey, you'll have to keep us up to date on anything you here regarding the
closure of this typical late 1930's, early 1940's fire station.
This really was what I consider to be a typical British fire station from a
special era in British firefighting history-The outbreak of war in 1939.Pete.

Pete M.;

Preston Circus Fire Station pics duly viewed, with great appreciation. I can now see where the 10th Bay is..... you must have nipped out and taken the snaps; and Presto, on the Web.

It must be quite an echoing shell - with the Trucks distributed out to Stations scattered in the greater urban area - I suppose Training and Admin. are elsewhere too.

Thanks again,
