Pete, I guess if you have someone steering the rear end it would make it a little easier to reverse into the firehouse?

Many stations throughout the City of New York due to building space have no back entrance into their quarters, so traffics stopped and apparatus is then reversed in the firehouse.Their are still many very old firehouses in some districts which date back to the turn of the last century which in the days of the horse drawn apparatus was fine, but for today's apparatus it can be a work of heart for the driver, especially with these 50ft long Seagrave tractor drawn aerials..........Pete

Pavel:

I have watched the New York FD trucks turning out for a call, from those old Fire-Houses. The crew get kitted up, and then run out, ahead of their engine, to get the infamous NYC traffic stopped far enough back, so that their engine can swing out into the street; and then pick them up.

Same procedure, on return, when "backing into quarters".

This Aerial carries an officer and full crew - known as a Truck Crew. In addition to getting the ladder(s) up; they do Forced Entry, Search for People Inside, Rescue, Ventilation, etc. They don't move any water - that is done by the Engine Crew on the pumper.

Truck and Engine crews have a good-natured rivalry - but are always on the job.

Great picture, Pete.

Pat_R-B, thanks for your added comments to this picture. The first time I visited this firehouse back in May 2002, this unit was out, and although I saw a couple in Manhattan, they were responding to alarms so could'nt get any pictures.Struck it lucky though in 2007.Got the subway to Brooklyn Heights so the wife could see the best view of the skyline of Manhattan, found the firehouse again, but this time major work was being carried out on the interior so both engine and ladder apparatus were parked in street and(The good lady didn't mind stopping)
perfect for pictures. The Brooklyn Bridge is just 10 minutes walk away, so we walked back across the bridge and into downtown Manhattan.I got my pictures-she enjoyed the views, shops, etc.Bus back uptown to Hotel(Long day-but brilliant).
