Old Fire station Stanley Falkland Islands

The old Fire Station taken in 1986 with the Bedford/Carmichael 'B' Type Wrt........

Stanley, the tiny capitol city of the Falkland Islands was founded in 1844 with the first fire brigade being established on the British Colony in 1898 and was known as the Stanley Volunteer Fire Brigade. After the 1982 conflict with Argentina, the Fire Brigade received its first Bedford/Carmichael Type B Water Tender giving it a new lease of life, and then in 1984,the Stanley Fire Brigade received its second Bedford/Carmichael Type B Water Tender. These fire appliances are still in use today. The Fire Service was for many years run on a voluntary basis as part of the Public Works Department until 1985 when the Islands Fire & Rescue Service was born and a full time staff of two were employed in conjunction with the Police Force. The service is today a stand alone department comprising 5 full time firemen and 40 retained firemen who are paid an hourly wage, and a retention bonus. The Fire Service today is still based in Stanley and is the only brigade on the Islands, and its worth noting that in 2008,they mark their 110th Anniversary serving the Falkland Islands community of just 3,000 people, but now from a new fire station opened in 1988.......

Pavel, I've only got the three pictures of the Falkland Islands fire brigade, only other pictures are of the Military(RAF)appliances based
in the Falklands at the same period of time(1986)....Pete Matten

what are they running now?. would I be wrong to assume the old beddy has gone?

Stevie, The Falkland Islands Fire & Rescue Service(F.I.F & R.S)in 2008, its 110th
year of operation are running the following appliances from Stanley.
1)1997 Dennis Sabre/Carmichael Wrt. 2)1999 Dennis Sabre/Carmichael Wrt/RT.
3)1983 Range Rover/Carmichael RIV. 4)1996 Landrover 110/Carmichael L4P.
The Landrover Defender L4P carries 200gal of water, pump, extinguishers, chimney gear and a roor ladder and is the"first away"to chimney fires.
The fire service also run four other Landrover Defenders(three 90s and a 130),
these are used mainly by the Command Group-the whole time men who not only have
to carry out all the servicing of firefighting equipment and hydrant testing,
but unusually all the appliances, major maintenance as well, this is to save on the cost of sending mechanics out from the UK.
Regarding the 1982 Bedford/Carmichael Wrt and the 1984 Bedford/Carmichael 4x4
Wrt, the 1982 one went to Stanley Airport around the year 2000, and actually the
other, the 1984 Bedford was still operational at the station in 2002, thats the
most up-to-date news I have of that one so don't know its where abouts.I hope
this answers your questions.

Pete:

You certainly do get around - what a great range of countries and fire apparatus that you are giving us in your contributions.

This one certainly has the air of a rural Fire Dept, similar to ones found in our country areas. The "home-made" construction - various gear piled around and, chimney fires [Flue Fires] making up a number of the runs. And, yes, DIY Maintenance and Repair - either due to low finances, or, long way from the factory service.

Really enjoy your information on each one. Keep up the good work.

Regards,

Pat_R-B, an old friend of mine took the pictures from the Falklands in 1986 when stationed there when in the armed forces. The other pictures I've taken over the
years having been to several places.San Diego/Mexico in 1990 with my son, New York City in May 2002-should have gone end of Sept 2001.Came over with my wife last year(May 2007)again.My second visit-her first(She loved it)We'll be back.
Now the kids have all gone, we're catching up on some of the things we could'nt
do years ago-holidays abroad, especially Europe, and maybe again across the pond.

I remember walking past this station in feb 1987 and seeing the fire engine and thinking thats got to be the smallest fire station in the world??

The 4x4 bedford is still running, the 2x4 is still around but its pump is us. The 6x4 Ranger rover had an engine blow up last week and its unlikely to be repaired (It was on a long high speed run to an RTA 60 miles away when it overheated). The Falkland Fire & Rescue service is about to replace the bedfords with a second hand machine from Irlland and a Landrover 130 conversion will replace the Range Rover in April.

I went to Wikipedia and read about the Falklands. So, after reading the above as well, I was curious about a few things. Do any of the camps on the islands have their own fire appliances for the air strips and their areas? Does Stanley have fire hydrants? What size water tanks do the FIFRS WrTs have? Outside of Stanley, how is water supplied for fires?

If you go on the facebook page of falklands fire and rescue service, they show the entire line up.
They seem to have two dennis's, a lot of land rovers, the 4x4 bedford, the range rover looks like its been stripped down of all useful kit.
