In 1996 the NSWFB conducted a research on what factors might be impairing response times of the brigade. Part of this research was a trial of appearance of the appliances to determine its effect upon response times. The brigade trialed a number of colours including yellow as shown, white, all red and a red white mix which was in the end chosen along with a conspicous red-white reflective tape. This design can be seen on the newer Varley Commanders.
