Built in 1904 for horse drawn appliances, this station served for around seventy years before being replaced at a new location on the inner ring road. Darlington Fire Brigade had a reputation for being innovative, and - as can be seen here - by the early 1920s it had a completely motorized front line fleet, with a pump escape, a pumper, a TL and a towing tender with a trailer pump, which was apparently referred to as the “country machine”, although it was replaced in 1931 by a larger Dennis which could also tow the trailer pump. This Dennis incidentally was the first ever enclosed fire appliance in service in England.

As a boy I visited this station on many occasions and slid down the pole a few times.. Bsck then in the fifties the fleet included a Dennis F12 PE, two Commer B types water tenders, a 1938 Morris Magirus 27 m TL, an ex NFS Austin heavy unit, an Austin ATV with trailer pump, a Land Rover and a Bedford light van, along with an AFS Green Goddess.
