Successive generations of these combined pump-ambulances have increased their pump and tank capacities - and added other improvements in functionality without ever increasing the footprint of the vehicle. This is a major accomplishment when taking into account that its compact dimensions are a necessity in this crowded city with its many very narrow streets.

The diphasic low pressure mixing system, used at a flow rate of around 100 LPM, is a more manageable alternative to high pressure hose reels and UHP systems. It has been in use with BSPP for a couple of years on newer units - and is said to have the same effectiveness as a 250 to 350 LPM conventional branch. All BSPP pumpers being acquired now are also equipped with CAFS, so the limited tank capacity on these new PS pumpers is around eight minutes of autonomy with the diphasic line, and around two or three with low pressure water or CAF. Still kind of a close call if the fire is serious, but a lot better than on older generations.

Recent comments from BSPP officials indicate that PS units and their crews have been responsible in recent months for dealing with over 90% of incidents to which they have been called without needing any support. This is despite the fact that a standard first response to a structure fire in Paris always consists of at least two pumpers and a turntable ladder - the so called “depart normal”.
