Water carriers were practically unheard of when I lived in England years ago. But now they seem to be popping up everywhere - even in London, although it seems in that case they were never actually deployed and rather quickly sold off. What is going on? Has the UK hydrant network proven over the years to be no longer up to the job of supplying adequate supplies for firefighting? It seemed like it used to be just fine, with a dense network of hydrants such that a pump could get set in to one ( or sometimes two ) and have enough water to do the job in almost all situations.

Can anyone explain why water carriers are now becoming such a regular feature in fire service fleets?
