Although the Mercedes 1017 was a very popular fire truck chassis in Germany following its introduction in 1977, the beefier 1220 was considered to be ideal for fire services after its introduction a few years later, because of its higher GVW and much more powerful engine. A small number were imported into the UK, mainly because no other chassis was around which had so much power back then.
