BCV549C Austin Gipsy L4P Cornwall

Gateshead rally 1993. May not be around any more. Quite a few are in preservation.

Looks like LWB version. Cheaper than Land Rover. Locker looks like wooden slats!?

Austin publicity spelt it Gipsy.

Yes it is the LWB version, which was less popular, although Cornwall bought them because It had two advantages. One was that it could accommodate a 70 IG water tank compared to the SWB 40, and the other was that it had more storage space so that it could (just about) seat four in the rear instead of only two, if so desired. As most of these were bought by industrial brigades this extra seating was rarely needed, and some of them deleted the back seats entirely in favor of more hoses or other gear. The disadvantage of the LWB unit was of course that it was a bit less capable in extreme off road conditions, but this was not often a worry for most factory brigades and a small price to pay for its extra capacity.
