Many of these were built on Unimog chassis, but if you wanted to add a crew cab you needed a longer wheelbase truck, such as this Magirus 4X4. Four wheel drive was a requirement, in case hoses needed to be laid over unmade roads. The hose used for relays was 75mm, stored in pre-connected 20 meter lengths. German fire services rarely used larger diameter hoses ( except for suction hoses ) until they started acquiring Hytrans systems with 150mm hoses.
All of these hose layers had a standard 800 LPM PP. The thinking behind this was that if a relay involved an uphill climb the pump could be set in at the right point along the relay layout to boost the pressure as needed. As most open water sources are low lying, this seems like it was quite a good idea.
I recently saw a video of a farm fire in Germany where a hose layer was used to move water across a field from a stream. Another reason for a 4X4 chassis!
