These have largely replaced the old LF8 pumpers, which were mostly based on the now long discontinued Mercedes Vario eight ton panel vans or chassis cabs. They are mainly used by volunteers, are of course much less expensive than full size alternatives, do not require a HGV license and have enough capacity to handle most incidents quickly, as well as being more amenable to being used in old town and village streets which are often quite challenging for full size vehicles. Mercedes decided to replace the Vario with the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter, which is actually used quite often in Japan for compact fire pumper applications, but this has not proven to be very popular in Germany, so the market for IVECO opened up at just the right moment.
