The flexibility of these trucks combined with their relatively low cost means that their numbers have increased dramatically in Germany in recent years. While quite a lot of volunteer fire companies do often operate pod carriers and special purpose roll on/roll of containers, these are just too costly and/or too rarely used for many. These trucks, which can accommodate a large number of pre- loaded standard size wheeled baskets with a wide variety of items, offer the ability to address numerous different situations and needs with a single vehicle which is capable of being loaded up with custom baskets quite quickly. With only one truck a volunteer company has the potential to operate a foam tender, a hazmat rig, a BA tender, a hose wagon, a light and ventilation unit, a relay pumper, a specialized line, water, collapse or RTA rescue rig, a flood control tender or an incident overhaul vehicle - all depending on which baskets are loaded into it.
I should add that these vary in size, from five ton MB Sprinters all the way up to 16 ton trucks on various chassis. Most have standard two door cabs, but crew cabs like this example are also quite common. Both 2X4 and 4X4 chassis are used, depending on road conditions in the response area, but 4X4 seem to be much more popular.
