Canopy type crew cab, to be able to seat five without a full length four door cab. The four door would have made it necessary to have a longer wheelbase chassis so as to still permit the ladder turret to be operated through 360 degrees. This solution was quite popular for quite a long time, and was almost universal in the US until the seventies. A British example was the Dennis-Metz F17 TLP, many of which were brought into use in the early fifties.
If this really was placed into service in 1933 it will have been one of the first all steel turntable ladders. Although it is only a three section 24 metre ladder, which is a straight copy of the earlier wooden design, steel ladders of 30 metres were soon being built, followed by examples as high as 45. Before the introduction of steel, first by Magirus and very quickly afterwards by Metz, the weight of wood turntable ladders restricted them to around 26 metres.
