based Edinburgh at Lauriston Fire Station, then transferred to MacDonald Road Fire Station, seen in this photo.

originally had 4 tone horns (when brand new and based at Lauriston) but due to representations from the Police these were paired off to produce 2 tones from double hooter units.

the original 4 Bosch flat horns went through a 4 note / tone cycle, twice for every press of the floor button. Within the 4 notes the sequence rose in pitch as each note sounded. The Police objected, (as two tone horns were fairly new too), and so the workshop spaired them off to produce that peculiar continental two tone sound.

A second Police objection came when the ET had alternating flat flashing lights were fitted to the black radiator grille. The Police insisted they could be mistaken for traffic turning signals, and insisted they flash in unison. So another pairing job to make them flash together. see

This looks very similar to the Merryweather ET supplied to West Ham around the same time. It does look like it has a reduced rear overhang, though, for some reason - resulting in a slightly shorter body length?

I guess that looking at the two photos, the body length is probably around the same. The difference seems to be that the Edinburgh unit is on a longer ( possibly TTL?) wheelbase chassis….I am not sure why a brigade would want a long wheelbase ET, especially if they did not want the extra body length. I think they might have perhaps been able to have Merryweather build their ET on an existing LWB AEC TTL chassis they had already in stock, which would have saved time and possibly some money too. After all, we are talking about a Scottish brigade!
