Sutphen is the longest established fire apparatus manufacturer in the US, and has built a well deserved reputation for first rate products. The quint with a mid mounted aerial ladder or tower ( to keep the overall height low) is one of their classic offerings, and versions of it have been around for around seventy years or more. Like this example, these usually have 65, 75 or 85 foot ladders, with or without baskets, and a 1500 or 2000 US GPM pump, as well as a small water tank around 200 to 400 USG.
Although - like other manufacturers- Sutphen do occasionally build for stock, the vast majority of their products are fully custom built, so detailed specifications can vary quite a lot. Although they use the same cab as most other firms, their trucks can always be recognized by the squared off front light housings, which are unique to their products.
If you want to see a few really L O N G American fire trucks, take a look at the Sutphen pages on this site. Their 105 foot (32 meter) mid mounted aerial tower ladders are quite amazing - and they don’t even have a rear steering axle!
