The Welfare Unit was based at Avonmouth when this picture was taken, but has now moved to Yate. It was in the 3rd bay, but since the BASU was moved to Yate from Temple the Welfare unit has been parked in the drill yard behind the 3rd bay, partially undercover below the wash down roof.

May I ask what the welfare unit is used for, and how often it is turned out, if anyone knows?

What it says on the tin! Food, drinks, toilets etc. Attends major or prolonged incidents.

Thanks. Bob. Is it only used for firefighters, or does it serve other first responders and/or fire and disaster victims too?

We have similar trucks and vans in the states in many places, but they go by numerous different names and some are limited to looking after only the fire service members while others are not.

In Germany they tend to cater to anybody, but the VdF in Italy confine their use to their own personnel only!

In the Tokyo Fire Dept, these vehicles are used by firefighters only, equipped with toilets, shower, drying clothes facilities and 2 beds. Food Logistics comes with separate trucks.

Hi Rob, not sure about its use. I once saw the previous unit at a community payback session for offenders, and on TV at a murder scene, but, as I say, that was previous vehicle. This one has been seen at large exercises as well.

Rob - the vehicle is mobilised approx twice per month, not often, but much welcomed by those on the incident ground.

Thanks. It’s good to know that even with the belt tightening which fire services are having to make it is still possible to have units like this available.
