MAN-Rosenbauer HLF20 Rescue-pump

(2013) Code 2/46/1 FS 02 - Frankfurt FD
19 units ordered in 2013. This generation will be soon replaced by more compact, lighter, easier engines.
In these 12 years, some notes were observed:
Too large & bulky, to many unnecessary tools, too much computerization

I wonder where the Rosembauer electrics fit into this thinking? Fire trucks everywhere seem to have growing bigger and heavier over the years, and the introduction of rescue pumpers has only exacerbated this trend. It is always easier to add more and more comprehensive rescue equipment while still not throwing out anything needed for firefighting.

Rob. Very valid and political point you raised here, Frankfurt is against electrical appliances, as I have been told during my last visit.
For example, Stuttgart FD has just been dictated by the municipality to acquire 2 Rosenbauer RT! Berlin must follow the same pattern, I guess!

Stuttgart has switched to four man crews on their rescue pumpers, thinking that this improves coverage by increasing the number of units available by 50% while reducing crew size. As most calls - up to 80% - are AFAs or general service runs, this improves pumper availability for more serious fire and rescue incidents. Some other a German cities may be considering this approach, which is already quite common in many American cities. The logic is that a rapidly responding four person crew can deal with most incidents alone, including small fires, automatic fire alarms and most general service alarms. The first alarm total manpower response to serious incidents does not change. Instead of two six man crews, three four man pumpers respond along with the aerial and command car or van too, for a sixteen rider response.

The RTs are showing up in more and more new places, including in both the US and Canada. EOne has also very recently introduced a fully electric prototype (also with a recharging standby diesel engine), while Pierce has what is really a hybrid, with a conventional diesel power train and an additional electric motor and battery system. Interesting that both look exactly like their previous conventional diesel powered pumpers, with EOne claiming that this is because the users like this, rather than mentioning it might possibly be less expensive than a totally new design like the RT!
