This is similar to the way EMS IN New York City was integrated into FDNY. The service has separate quarters and different shift systems, but was vastly improved by being integrated in to the fire service.

In Chicago EMS share quarters with CFD, mainly because the department has had responsibility for EMS for many years now.

The pattern in other towns and communities varies a lot, with both organizations fully integrated in some places, and completely separate in others, especially where one or both is a volunteer outfit.

The UK is one of few countries where fire and EMS are always entirely separate; in most cases the two organizations are combined.
