The combination of a wheeled 20 meter ladder with a relatively high capacity pump was never a common sight in France, especially as early as 1922. Note this unit has no water tank, as there was a space constraint - but mainly because that ladder must have been very heavy. Most French wheeled ladders were limited to 18 meters because of their weight, and this one must have needed all six crew members to move it around! Later, the switch from wood to steel ladders happened quite quickly in the fifties because even the 18 meter wood ladders were quite difficult to use. Both types were usually carried by trucks which did not have a pump or water tank, and served only to carry the ladder alone.
