Tatra Force 8x8 Omars Special Rescue Ostrava
In 2019 the fire service of the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic purchased a Heavy Rescue Unit based on a Tatra Force 6x6 chassis fitted with a Omars Rescue body and Hiab hydraulic lifting crane.
In 2022 it was decided that the vehicle needed modifying to increase its parameters and therefore it was sent back to Tatra Trucks so a fourth axle could be added. In addition, Kobit-THZ made changes to the vehicles bodywork.
This heavyweight has a Omars 100-T lifting arm, capable of lifting 25 tonnes and a Hiab X-HiPro 418 hydraulic crane with a lifting capability is 37.5 tonnes. It also carries specialist equipment such as airbags, straps and heavy duty chains.
The Special Rescue Unit has the ability to go off-road and through up to 1,500mm of water. It is based at Zabreh Fire Station, Ostrava

Japan has similar rescue rigs, not Tatra of course different chassis i.e. Isuzu, Hino etc...

Rob, I think it is more a case of over indulgence, as the Moravian-Silesian district already has a Mercedes Actros Bison Heavy Rescue with crane, a pair of Tatra Force 6x6 Rescue Units which are fitted with heavy duty hydraulic winches, plows on the front and Hiab cranes, PLUS a pair of Kerex Demag 40 tonne cranes purchased in 2017 at Ostrava and Karvina.
It is clear that in the Czech Republic money is no object for the fire service when it comes to investing in the latest equipment.

A bit surprising that so many of these are on commercial chassis. In Germany, where heavy cranes are very widespread, it seems they are almost all custom rigs, with capacities from 40 to 90 tons on three, four or five axles. Truck based cranes do pop up in quite a few other countries, as Jacques Peter mentions, and I am guessing it has a lot to do with fire services tending to want to use locally manufactured chassis like the Tatra in this example. Interestingly, some countries’ fire services do not seem to see any need to operate cranes like this, but rely on private crane hire contractors instead.

Tatra
This Tatra chassis, in 4X4, 6X6 and 8x8 versions, is used for fire pumpers, tankers and airfield crash trucks in numerous countries from China to the USA, and is very highly regarded for its capabilities, reliability and durability.
