By this time diesels were becoming the preferred engine choice for many brigades, as the fuel consumption and maintenance costs of petrol engines were much higher. But the changeover took more than thirty years, after Merryweather pioneered diesel power from 1950 onwards. When we sold the first eleven Ford D series to Gloucestershire in 1967, we had to source a six cylinder petrol engine from Ford Canada, as there was no way the brigade would consider a diesel. A few years later all Ford fire appliances were either Ford or Perkins diesels.
