Although widespread in southern parts of Europe, these specialized units are still comparatively rare in Northern Europe because in the past weather conditions and vegetation did not often challenge conventional fire tenders designed primarily for urban structure firefighting. With the intensity of global warming, this is now changing, and more northern fire services are beginning to acquire these units on off road 4X4 or 6X6 chassis with big water tanks, up to 4,000 to 6,000 litres on two axles, and up to 12,000 on three.

Taking France as an example, rural pump tankers actually outnumber structural fire pumpers, with over 4000 of each type currently in front line service. Sides has begun to capitalize on their many years of building these by making recent deliveries to German fire services, to add to their growing fleets of Unimogs.
